Is there anyone else out there that just loves a great bowl of Steel Cut Oats? You are my people! Nothing like a creamy bowl of steel cut oats with a little lemon curd and then topped with fresh berries. LOVE! This blog post is about how to make steel cut oats. Some times, the instructions on the package are just not good enough. Follow these instructions for How To Make Steel Cut Oats to have the best morning pick me up.
Making steel cut oats when I have some time is a great way to prepare for any early morning. Making several cups and then dividing them up into smaller containers is my jam. I like to warm them up in the microwave for an early morning breakfast. The great thing is steel cut oats are totally portable. You can take them with you and eat them on the go or heat them up at work.

One of my favorite, on the go breakfasts, is McDonald’s Oatmeal. If you have never bought one, I encourage you to stop by some morning before 10:30. That is when McDonald’s stops serving breakfast. It is not steel cut oats, but the apples, golden raisins and dried cranberries are all so delicious. I often use my own oatmeal and create my own elevated McDonald’s Oatmeal. Nuts are a great addition with this breakfast delicacy.
How to Make Steel Cut Oats
1. Steel Cut Oats begin with a good oatmeal. I like to purchase mine at Sprouts in the bulk section. There are lots of great steel cut oats, but having a good quality one makes a difference.
2. Creamy steel cut oats begins with water and milk. All my life I have made hot cereals with milk. It adds another level of creaminess. The ratio for oats is 1 cup of oats to 3 1/2 cups of liquid. I use one cup of milk and 2 1/2 cups of water. Basically, this is it.

3. Bring the liquids to a boil and then add the steel cut oats slowly. Stir everything together and bring back to a boil. Once it is boiling again, turn the heat down to medium low. You want the liquids to continue to boil, but at a very low temperature.
4. Cook the steel cut oats for 40 minutes, stirring occasionally. I set the timer for 10 minutes to remind me. It just needs a gentle stir to keep everything mixed together. The longer the oats cook, the creamier it becomes. They also get quite thick. This is the way I like them. You can always add more milk after you have cooked them, but you cannot get them softer if you cheat on the cooking time.

5. Put the lid on the pan and turn off the heat. Let the oats sit for 10 – 15 minutes. This is essential in my mind. These oats need time to rest.
6. After cooking the oats, I divide them into four containers. I want to eat mine immediately, but if I have cooked the oats in the afternoon, I usually am not in the mood. In morning, I will be ready. These will keep for two weeks in the refrigerator.
7. Serve with brown sugar, nuts, dried fruit, fresh berries or lemon curd.
